14th July

Today, Edith Hargrove arrived at the hospital alone, with no one beside her during the birth. Her husband had walked out on her months ago, the moment he learned she was expecting. I did my best to comfort her, but her eyes were full of quiet sadness.

The labour went on for hours, and then at last the first cry of her newborn son echoed through the room. I checked him carefully, and he was completely healthy. I wrapped him in a clean white blanket and turned to place him in Edith’s arms. Then something made me stop.

My hands began to tremble. I looked at the baby’s face, then at Edith’s, and before I could stop myself, tears filled my eyes.

“Doctor, is everything all right?” she asked in a worried voice.

I could not answer at once. My eyes had fallen on a small birthmark on the baby’s left arm. I knew it immediately. It was the same mark my son had on his arm, the son I had lost touch with years ago, the son who had vanished from my life and left nothing but silence behind.

I took a deep breath, and with a cracked voice, I told her that mark was my son’s. I told her this little boy was my grandson.

Edith’s face went pale. The world seemed to sway around her. But then the loneliness that had followed her into that delivery room slowly disappeared, replaced by a deep and overwhelming emotion. She held her son tight against her chest, and I stood there, moved beyond words, realising that this tiny child had just restored a bond I thought was lost forever.

That night I learned no mark we carry is accidental. Sometimes the smallest life brings back the people we thought we had lost, and the heart remembers what it loves, no matter how much time has passed.
