So she walked into that hospital all by herself, no partner, no family, nobody to hold her hand through the labour. And the moment her baby was born, the doctor took one look at the little one and saw something that made him cry. You won’t believe this.
Emily had come in completely alone. Her husband had done a runner a few months earlier, the minute he found out she was pregnant.
The labour went on for hours, but eventually the first proper cries of the newborn echoed around the room. Everything had gone smoothly, and the baby was as healthy as could be.
The doctor carefully picked up the little lad, ready to pass him over to Emily, when something odd happened. He froze. His hands were shaking slightly. He looked down at the baby’s face, then across at Emily, and his eyes filled with tears.
“Doctor, is everything all right?” Emily asked, her heart in her mouth.
He gave a nod, but couldn’t speak for a few seconds. Then, in a voice that cracked, he whispered something that left Emily utterly rooted to the spot.
And honestly, the rest of it is just… wait for it.
The doctor had noticed a tiny birthmark on the baby’s arm. He knew it instantly—it was identical to the one his own son had, the son he hadn’t seen or spoken to in years, the son who’d completely disappeared from his life. His heart just sank.
Emily saw where he was staring and asked what was going on. The doctor took a shaky breath, tears streaming down his face, and told her that birthmark was exactly like his son’s. Which meant—this little baby was his grandson.
Emily felt the whole room spin. All that loneliness and pain from the birth seemed to melt away, replaced by a huge, overwhelming rush of emotion. She hugged her son tight against her chest, while the doctor, completely overcome, realised that this tiny little baby had just brought back a bond he’d thought was lost forever.
