Fine, we wont throw you out for the holidays. Make three guest rooms readymy sisters and my niece will stay overnight. Youll spend the night in the kitchen.
Margaret, do you realize Im the sole legal owner of this house? I have the title deeds. So dont even think about breaking inif you try, the police will be called.
Victoria had just finished her shift and was planning to swing by the town centre. New Years was only two weeks away, and an old friend, Susan, had invited her over.
Victoria knew who would be there: the hosts daughter with her husband and children, her sister, and her niece who was still at university.
Shed often visited Susans home and knew everyone well, so she wanted to buy the gifts in advance.
Choosing presents was Victorias forte; giving them, her delight. Already she could picture herself wandering down the twinkling aisles, inspecting ribbons, watching the clerk wrap parcels in glossy paper.
Her mood soured the moment she stepped out onto the car park. Waiting beside her sedan was Rachel, the sister of her former husband.
Hey, Vic! Rachel called. What took you so long? Im freezing my toes off.
Good afternoon, Rachel. I didnt expect to see you here, Victoria replied.
Why not? Were still family, after allat least thats what weve pretended for twenty years, Rachel said.
Thankfully, were not pretending any longer, Victoria answered, reaching for the car door.
Rachel halted her.
Listen, Vic, I have a request. Actually, the whole family has one.
What family, Rachel? Ive been away from yours for a year and have no ties to you now. Im not entertaining any demands, Victoria snapped.
Just hear me out. I dont know how you and Michael split the property, but Mum still believes the house you live in belongs to our side.
You bought it together with Mike, and he spent ten years furnishing it. We all celebrated Christmas and May Day there. What now?
Mum had planned to host her birthday in May, gather the whole clan on the veranda, as we always did. And you shut us out. You drove off somewhere unknown.
I dont see why youre telling me all this, Victoria asked. I was just visiting a friend, thought Id pop over, and then I left. Sorry, I forgot to ask you.
Forget about our family gatherings in my house. When Mike and I split, we agreed: the flat, the car and the garage went to him, the house stayed with me. It was all legally documented. So you can meet at Mikes flat instead. Thats it.
Vic, Mum asked if we could use the house on the 31st like before. A lot of relatives will turn uptheres no room for everyone, Rachel said.
Margaret, you asked? Thats odd. I cant believe it. After twenty years of her only demanding things from me, she suddenly asks for a favour. Tell her I refuse, and book the relatives a hotel instead.
Victoria slipped back into the car. The prospect of hunting for presents vanished. Ill shop tomorrow, she muttered, heading home.
She and Michael had been married for close to twenty years. Theyd bought the house a decade ago.
A year earlier Michael declared, At fortyfive lifes just beginning, and announced he would build a future with his young, attractive secretary.
Victoria didnt try to stop him, but she refused to be a victim. She kept the house and the accumulated family assets; Michael walked away with a twobedroom flat, a Toyota Corolla, and a garage.
Because their daughter, Emma, was still a student, Michael never claimed a joint account.
A few days earlier, Emma called to say shed be staying in her university hall over New Years.
Mom, will you be upset? she asked. Ill be back for the holidays.
That gave Victoria the push to accept Susans invitation. In that company she would not be alone.
Knowing Rachel, she sensed trouble wasnt over. She was right.
That evening her exmotherinlaw called.
Victoria, arent you taking on too much? Youve seized Michaels house, and now you think we cant bring any trouble on you?
Yes, well all celebrate New Years in my housethe one my son kindly let you use. Understood?
Fine, we wont throw you out for the holiday. Prepare three bedroomsmy sisters and my niece will stay. Youll sleep in the kitchen.
Margaret, do you forget Im the sole owner? I have the papers. If you try to force your way in, the police will be called.
Well see who ends up on the pavement! Bring the rooms ready; well haul in all the food ourselves, so you wont have to cook a thing. And dont arguethis New Years will be etched in your memory forever!
In my opinion, Michaels mother has gone completely mad this year, Victoria thought.
Margaret had never been a peacemaker, but her sudden performance startled her former daughterinlaw. Did the woman really think Victoria would cower and obey her orders?
Once Victoria had been the model daughterinlaw; the other two had eventually accepted the matriarchs authority.
Now that she and Michael were divorced, Margarets words only left Victoria bewildered: what were they hoping to achieve?
Meanwhile, in Margarets flat, a plan was being drafted.
Rachel, you and Alex are in charge of groceries. Buy everything you can now; well cook on the evening of the 31st and the morning of the 1st, Margaret instructed.
Well handle the cold cuts and hot dishes. Sarah and Olivia will make the salads. Well pack everything in containers, and well borrow two dinner sets from Vicshe still has them. When Mike moved out, he left the crockery behind, Alex added.
Mom, what if she refuses us entry? Rachel asked.
Let her try! Well be twelve peopleour whole extended family. Shell be embarrassed. Imagine the scene: she opens the door and on the porch stand Uncle Kevin and Aunt Lucy, plus Tom, Natalie, and the rest. She cant possibly shut us out.
On the evening of 31December, at nine oclock, four cars pulled up outside number fourteen East Street.
Strange, Alex, Rachels husband, remarked. The lights are off. Maybe Vic isnt home?
She cant be anywhere else. Shes here, and Emma is probably arriving. Theyre hiding, waiting for us, Margaret chuckled. Ring the bell.
No one answered. The door stayed shut.
I have the spare key, Margaret said. I guessed Vic might try something, so I kept a copy.
She unlocked the gate, and the whole party spilled into the courtyard.
Hold on, Ill open the house now. Turn on the lights and bring everything into the kitchen; well set the table in a flash. As for Vic, let her hide if she wantswe wont even invite her to the table.
About twenty minutes later a clamor rose from the hallway.
The lady of the house is here, Alex announced.
But it wasnt the lady.
Victoria, meanwhile, was helping Susan set the table; the guests were due any minute.
Her phone rang abruptly.
This is Victoria Thompson? Your alarm system has been triggered. The patrol unit is on its way, a dispatcher said.
There are twelve people inside, claiming to be relatives with my permission, the officer continued.
I never gave anyone permission. Theyre relatives of my exhusband. They forced their way in, Victoria replied.
Youll be filing a report?
Yes. I’m out of town and wont return until the day after tomorrow.
The uninvited guests were escorted to the police station for a few hours. By the time they arrived at Margarets flat, the salads were already wilted and the hot dishes had cooled.
When Victoria finally got home, Michael called, demanding she withdraw the report.
Vic, didnt you change the lock? Didnt you expect this? he asked.
I didnt change itwhy ruin the door? I just used the spare key Id kept, she answered.
Then why lock the old one when you left?
I guessed your mother wouldnt be satisfied and would show up with a crowd. I didnt want the door damaged by forced entry, Victoria explained.
So you deliberately left the old lock, which she had a key to, and set off the alarm? You provoked them! You wanted them caught?
Mike, your family could have celebrated New Years at their own home. They chose otherwise, so they ended up in custody. Im not to blame for that.
By the way, I had to tidy the flat and air it out because what they left on the table had already started to spoil, Victoria added.
Why didnt you warn Rachel about the alarm? Michael asked.
Why should I? The gate and front door have signs that read Protected by Police. Anyone can read that.
Tell your mother, Rachel, Alex and everyone else that Ill never welcome them as guests again, Victoria said.
This time Ill withdraw the statement, but it wont happen again. The law will be applied in full strength
